Valentina hails from a pack that needed aid. Her marriage to Attalos was also a marriage of the packs. It was a duty she was very proud of. Pups were expected from the royal couple, of course, but after a while of nothing, Valentina realized that the king was infertile, likely due to his heavily inbred bloodline. She couldn't confront him about this, however, as he would likely blame it on her. In that case, he would likely break the marriage to wed another, and her kingdom would fall to ruin. No, something else had to be done. Valentina concluded that Bard, a guard who bore a great resemblance to Attalos, would make the perfect surrogate. He refused her initial invitation, of course, but she finally won him over by reminding him it would be in service to his kingdom. (and she would have him killed if he didn't help her). So that's how Rudy and his siblings came to be! 

But the truth eventually found it's way to light, and chaos was introduced to Rudyard's life. His biological father killed, his mother exiled, and he and his siblings were chased off.
