The world seemed to be collapsing all around her. 
She had been sickly since birth, and given up by her parents. An earthquake had collapsed her old home and sent her new family scrambling to find a new place to live. Then Heyl merged with Dawnguard, leaving everyone feeling uprooted and suspicious. Ill winds had then swept over Heylguard. Her brother's mate had given birth to their litter and only one had survived. The rotting carcasses of carrion had begun sprouting right and left like fungus. Today, Kichirou had returned to the pack from somewhere with a horrible illness, with red eyes and a gaping, drooling mouth. When she caught sight and scent of him, Poppy bolted into the cave system. Unsure where she was headed, the juvenile dodged rocks and skirted underground waterways. As she flew, a feeling began to grow in the young wolf's chest. She had felt it before, when she had been angry or scared. It always rose halfway into her throat, but stopped there. She didn't know what it was, but had a strange feeling that it could have gone further, but didn't she know how to make it. Today she was the most frightened she had ever been. The pent-up stress she'd had since puphood balled up tight and rose, just like always. But today she allowed it to move further, and further, until she burst out onto an outcrop where an enormous hole in the side of the mountain looked down on the Heylguardian land. The feeling intensified and swelled until, before she knew what she was doing, Poppy opened her maw and an eruption of sound, a mixture between a raspy howl and a cry exploded from her and echoed off the walls of the cave. She had found her voice.
